Tips For Parents
KEEPING YOUR YOUNG DRIVER SAFE
At present the roads of Trinidad and Tobago are what can only be described as a danger zone. Simply getting from destination to destination is a high risk activity for the average individual far less a new driver. So it is no surprise that many accidents involve young or new drivers.
- Maintain a no drinking policy with your children. Charges under the new breathalyser legislation will have a particularly serious long term impact for a young driver.
- Remind them no speaking on cell phones or texting while driving.
- Insist on no loud music in order to minimise distractions.
- Limit the number of passengers in the car. The more passengers the greater the potential for distraction.
- Let them know that their passengers' lives are in their hands,
- Enrol them in a defensive driving programme
- Limit them from driving on certain highways without an experienced driver in the car
- Limit driving between at night. The chances of being involved in an accident sky-rockets at night for new and young drivers.
- Accompany them when driving, especially when it is raining, this allows them to become accustomed, to driving in all weather conditions
- Zero tolerance, for breaking the rules. Parents should penalise their young drivers for violations.
- Lead by example.
Remember to advise your insurer about any young (under 25) or new drivers who may use your vehicle.
