Tips For Parents

KEEPING YOUR YOUNG DRIVER SAFE

At present the roads of Trinidad and Tobago are what can only be described as a danger zone. Simply getting from destination to destination is a high risk activity for the average individual far less a new driver. So it is no surprise that many accidents involve young or new drivers.

  1. Maintain a no drinking policy with your children. Charges under the new breathalyser legislation will have a particularly serious long term impact for a young driver.
  2. Remind them no speaking on cell phones or texting while driving.
  3. Insist on no loud music in order to minimise distractions.
  4. Limit the number of passengers in the car. The more passengers the greater the potential for distraction.
  5. Let them know that their passengers' lives are in their hands,
  6. Enrol them in a defensive driving programme
  7. Limit them from driving on certain highways without an experienced driver in the car
  8. Limit driving between at night. The chances of being involved in an accident sky-rockets at night for new and young drivers.
  9. Accompany them when driving, especially when it is raining, this allows them to become accustomed, to driving in all weather conditions
  10. Zero tolerance, for breaking the rules. Parents should penalise their young drivers for violations.
  11. Lead by example.

Remember to advise your insurer about any young (under 25) or new drivers who may use your vehicle.
